Continuous Cast Copper Filtration

This application includes companies engaged in rolling, drawing, and extruding copper, brass, bronze, and other copper base alloy basic shapes such as plate, sheet, strip, bar, and tubing. These processes include copper rod manufacturing in which molten copper is formed into rod through a rolling process. This process typically uses a water-based emulsion for cooling and lubrication of the rolling stands. This coolant must be continuously filtered to eliminate the fines which would increase mill roll life. Industrial water is used to transfer heat from the caster wheel or caster belt and must be filtered as well. Typically vacuum filters and gravity filters are used for these applications. Complete system packages including tanks, pumps, heat exchanger and controls can be proposed.

Caster Water

In the process of continuous casting copper rod with a wheel type caster, acetylene soot is applied to the caster wheel as a release agent and insulator optimizing heat transfer. The amount of soot that remains in the water is critical to the process and relates directly to line speed, component life and product quality.

For Contirod or twin belt copper rod production installations, caster water is used to transfer the heat from the twin belts and dam blocks. Graphite is used to lubricate the caster dam blocks and it migrates into the water and must be controlled to reasonable levels.
